Blog #9: Hypebeasts

Many may not be familiar with the term "hypebeast", but the term is very common nowadays among teenagers and young adults. The term simply means a person who wears what is "hyped" or follows the trend to be cool or in style. A hypebeast tends to pay hundreds of dollars, maybe even thousands on 1 outfit. They often wait in lines and camp outside for the newest pair of shoes.

SUPREME

James Jebbia founded SUPREME in 1994 with the first location in Manhattan, New York. With a simple logo, a red box with "Supreme" in white Futura Heavy Oblique, this brand has became one of the most hyped brands of them all. Especially with their selling strategy. Instead of releasing new collections all at once, they will release a few items at a time, usually 5-15 items. These items would "drop" online and in stores once a week on Thursdays at 11 in the morning. This strategy is how the brand keeps the "hype" that lures in their customers.

ANTI SOCIAL SOCIAL CLUB

Anti Social Social Club was founded by Neek Lurk just a few years ago. The first Instagram post was on July 22, 2014, and every since then, this brand has become one of the most popular street brands in LA. The trippy-looking logo is usually on the back on the hoodies flannels. One of the most popular items is the simple dad hat.

BAPE

Founded by a Japanese man named Nigo, BAPE has become one of the most popular street brands all around the world. Nigo named the brand after the 1968 film ""Planet of the Apes". The name is a reference to "A Bathing Ape in Lukewarm Water", since Japanese people usually have baths in water that is above 104°F. Once the brand started becoming more well known, Nigo started making 30-50 shirts a week, selling half and giving half to friends. BAPE frequently collaborates with other brands and features characters from popular media such as Marvel characters, Nintendo, Sanrio, and SpongeBob SquarePants. From shoes to t-shirts to hoodies to accessories, BAPE has them all. Popular artists who have been seen wearing BAPE include Pharrell, Kanye West, Chris Brown, Travis Scott, and Keith Ape.

ADIDAS

Founded by Adolf Dassler on August 18, 1949, who is a rival to his older brother Rudolf, who had previously established Puma. What makes Adidas different is the logo, which consists of 3 parallel bars with the brand name that is uncapitalized and styled with a lower case "a". Adidas sells a large range of clothing that is perfect for any sport. Headquartered in Herzogenaurach, Germany, Adidas is the largest sportswear manufacturer in Europe and the second biggest in the world.

NIKE

Nike was founded on January 25, 1964, originally as Blue Ribbon Sports, by Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight. The brand officially became Nike, Inc on May 30, 1971. The name comes from the Greek goddess named Nike, the goddess of victory. The brand also has products under the main brand including Nike Gold, Nike+, Air Jordans etc. Nike is highly recognized with the simple Swoosh logo and "Just Do It".

Progress: This topic was a little more difficult due to the fact that I am not a hypebeast myself, but I already had much knowledge on this topic and these brands. I was actually the 16th follower on AntiSocialSocialClub's Instagram but I never knew how big the brand would get. Seeing a small brand become one of the biggest street wear brand is amazing. I was glad I was able to talk about some of these brands because I also am very interested in street wear. The only thing is that it's very costly. But I hope to see more collections out soon.

Reflection: Since I am not a hypebeast myself, it was very interesting looking up this topic. I have many friends who could be considered hypebeasts and I am familiar with the term and how it works and I find it very interesting. Especially since these clothes are very costly, but somehow my friends manage to get them. I have man clothes that I would like to wear myself but the time and money spent on these clothes would not be worth it in the end. I'm glad people find joy in this though because the fact that there is always new collections coming out and there is always something new for them, makes it different everytime I see them with smiles on their face because they just got the new hoodie by Supreme.
